On May 19, 2026, Univision Chicago interviewed Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) Manager Hugo Coronado to help viewers better understand the debate about protected bike lanes in Chicago.

Coronado highlighted that bike lanes improve road safety not only for bicyclists, but also pedestrians, scooter riders, and the drivers of cars. He shared about relevant other areas where protected bike lanes have faced similar debate and been used as a designed intervention to improve places. Hugo highlighted that this type of intervention is really about making more options for people for how they move around. He cites that around 80% of trips on divvy and scooters are not for recreation, and are rather for people likely going to jobs or appointments. In this way, protected bike lanes support local economies while also reducing congestion.
