In what has been dubbed the “age of cities” where does the real power for change lie? While governments at the national level are encumbered by partisanship and budgetary challenges, cities have unleashed their dominance in driving innovation and growth on the world stage. This new concentration of power in urban centers—what experts Bruce Katz and Jeremy Nowak describe as the “new localism”—has the potential to solve many of the challenges facing modern societies: economic growth, social inclusion, the challenge of diversity, and environmental sustainability. About the Authors
Bruce Katz is a global urbanist whose ideas focus on developing new models of finance, growth and governance in cities and nations. Previously he served as inaugural Centennial Scholar at Brookings Institution and as vice president and director of Brooking’s Metropolitan Policy Program for 20 years. He is a member of the RSA City Growth Commission in the United Kingdom and a visiting professor at London School of Economics. Katz previously served as chief of staff to the secretary of Housing and Urban Development and staff director of the Senate Subcommittee on Housing and Urban Affairs. Katz co-led the Obama administration’s housing and urban transition team. He is co-author of The Metropolitan Revolution and The New Localism, editor or coeditor of several books on urban and metropolitan issues, and a frequent media commentator.
Jeremy Nowak is a distinguished visiting fellow at Drexel University’s Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation. He is the founder of The Reinvestment Fund, one of the largest community investment institutions in the United States, and chaired the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Nowak is also the chief strategist for Spring Point Partners, a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, on the board of directors of the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, a member of the advisory board of the Institute for Urban Research at the University of Pennsylvania, and a senior fellow at the Center for Impact Investment at the University of New Hampshire’s Carsey School of Public Policy. A widely published author and columnist, he is the co-author The New Localism.
