Statement From MPC in Response To Recent Anti-Asian Hate Crimes
The Metropolitan Planning Council denounces the murder of eight Atlanta residents this week, six of whom were of Asian descent. In solidarity with Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander partners in metropolitan Chicago and nationwide, we recognize that this mass murder was not an isolated incident, but rather part of a deplorable pattern in which more than 4,000 hate crimes against Asians have been reported in the United States in the past year alone.
Hateful rhetoric and racist actions have no place in our society. We affirm our commitment to anti-racist movements to Stop Asian Hate, and put an end to all hate crimes driven by racism, xenophobia, and white supremacy. And we pledge to continue to focus our work on building a better, bolder, more equitable region through the lens of dismantling white supremacy in our nation and region, by changing the systemic policies and practices that for too long have harmed not only our Asian neighbors, but all people of color.
