Gabriel Charles Tyler

Gabriel joined the Metropolitan Planning Council in March 2017. He brings his storytelling experience to the Marketing Associate position, helping shape content that supports MPC’s work and managing the organization’s public profile.

Prior to MPC, Gabriel spent years advancing the conversation surrounding social justice and equity as a reporter and content creator for various media outlets and cultural organizations. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Editor of The New York Times Upfront, a newsmagazine for high school students co-published by Scholastic and The New York Times. During his tenure, he received accolades for his coverage of national issues, including a feature story that examined the contentious debate regarding concussions in football and the sport’s safety.

Gabriel leads with an innovative and inclusive worldview that’s necessary in the creation of meaningful social change. He serves as the Membership & Communications Lead of the Young Leaders Fund, an initiative of The Chicago Community TrustHe is a member of Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT), where he serves on the Truth and Narrative working group. He is also a fellow of Chicago United for Equity, an organization promoting racial justice in Chicago’s schools and communities.

Gabriel received his master’s in journalism from Columbia University and his bachelor’s in communications from DePaul University. A Chicago native, he grew up on the city’s South Side in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. He currently lives in Pilsen. His preferred pronouns are he/him/his.
