PROFESSIONAL STAFF

Housing Associate

The Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) seeks a motivated individual to forward MPC's Workforce Housing Collaboration efforts and increase policy and production activity which supports the full range of quality housing options near jobs and transit in the region and statewide.

Responsibilities:

  • Support outreach and education activities to promote inter-jurisdictional workforce housing collaborations between municipalities in the region
  • Work with individual municipalities and collectively with partnering municipalities to define inter-jurisdictional housing trust fund program parameters, expand existing or create a new inter-jurisdictional administrator, identify partnering agencies, leverage state incentives and resources, and set goals for the fund.
  • Work with internal Employer-assisted housing staff, employers, and other potential partners to support housing trust fund efforts and identify opportunities for private investment in the fund.
  • Support development activity which meets the Housing Endorsement Criteria approved by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, via program support, communications, advocacy and technical assistance.
  • Advance policy change at the local, state and federal level in support of the above development activity.
  • Coordinate with appropriate partners in the civic community, tapping into existing networks and communication vehicles.
  • Represent and promote MPC's mission and programs.
  • Research and document local progress and nationwide best-practices, related to a more equitable distribution of quality housing options near jobs and transit.
  • Organize public events and MPC committee meetings, and generally help advance the annual work plan.
  • Write reports, newsletter, web articles and letters to the editor.

Qualifications Sought:

  • Familiarity with housing and community development issues in the Chicago region.
  • Three or more years related experience working in housing development and/or policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, including government officials, developers and community-based organizations.
  • Strong analysis, written and oral communication skills required.
  • Computer literacy and organizational skills are also a must.
  • Familiarity with affordable housing finance is a plus.
  • Graduate degree in urban planning, public policy or related fields preferred.

Housing Associate

The Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) seeks motivated individual to support and lead various aspects of MPC's Public Housing in the Public Interest agenda, including increasing the audience of informed stakeholders committed to improved public and mixed-income housing communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and write publications (including newsletter and web articles) about the Chicago Authority's Plan for Transformation and other related topics
  • Manage and provide project management and technical assistance to pilot programs such as the Regional Housing Initiative, the Portability Pilot (related to service coordination and development activities with the Housing Choice Voucher) with regional public housing authorities, state agencies and other partners
  • Organize public events, roundtables and meetings
  • Represent MPC in various housing and planning activities.
  • Assist MPC's broader housing and sensible growth policy agenda.

Qualifications Sought:

  • Familiarity with housing and community development issues in the Chicago region.
  • Three or more years related experience working with public housing authorities and/or affordable housing communities and tenants.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, including government officials, tenant leaders and community-based organizations.
  • Strong analytical, written and oral communication skills required.
  • Computer literacy and organizational skills are also a must.  
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS and related technologies preferred.
  • Graduate degree in urban planning, social service or related fields preferred.

Regional Policy & Sensible Growth Intern

Organizational Mission

MPC researches and develops policy recommendations and conducts outreach and advocacy in partnership with public officials and community leaders to enhance equity of opportunity and quality of life throughout metropolitan Chicago. About the Internship
Supports Regional Policy program staff with research and writing on transportation, urban development issues, and sensible growth. An understanding of transportation and urban development policy, regional and state government, and community development is preferred. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills are a must.

Responsibilities

  • Research best practices and analyze policy recommendations
  • Assist with writing and editing of MPC written material, including content for Web site and print publication

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft word, Adobe Illustrator, the Internet and computerized databases
  • Ability to juggle projects, stay organized, and adhere to time tables Ability to work well independently as well as with others
  • Familiarity with regional planning policy issues and/or the ability to distill concise, accurate descriptions of complicated policy issues a plus
  • GIS experience a plus

Interns at MPC have exposure to a broad range of regional policy issues and the opportunity to connect with a variety of planning agencies, community groups and officials.

Hours: Minimum 15 hours a week, maximum 30 hours a week, beginning ASAP

Compensation: $12/hour
